When: Sunday 11th January, 9.40pm, Sky Sports 1
Current Betting: Packers -1
The two teams come into this game in very different ways. Almost nobody was predicting the Redskins to make the postseason. In fact, most people thought that they would be in the running for the first overall pick in next season’s draft.
The Redskins have won four in a row to end the season and their active win streak is behind just the Chiefs.
The Packers started the season as one of the favourites to win the Super Bowl. They have made the postseason but it has been almost the season has been almost the opposite of the Redskins. Green Bay have seriously underperformed with Aaron Rodgers looking far from his usual greatness.
They have lost their last two games including an absolute destruction by the Arizona Cardinals. It is perhaps surprising that the Packers are favourites for this game as they have not looked too good, even in their wins, this season.
Players to Watch
The whole Green Bay team has struggled this season, including the reigning league MVP. Ever since Jordy Nelson was injured in preseason, the offence has struggled to ever get on a roll. Randal Cobb has not lived up to the big contract he signed in the offseason and running back Eddie Lacy has been out of sorts and missed time this season through injury and reports of off the field issues.
Despite all of that, not many would be surprised to see Aaron Rodgers turn it on when it matters and get this Packers offence rolling again.
If the Packers are going to make it past Washington, let alone to the Super Bowl, it will probably fall on Aaron Rodgers to take them there.
As mentioned above, the Redskins were thought to be a contender for the worst team in the league coming into the season. With the high draft pick in next year’s draft they would have probably been looking for a new quarterback.
However, the form of Kirk Cousins has turned all that around and the team still hurting from the Robert Griffin trade look like they may have found their quarterback of the future.
Cousins was top 10 in yards passing this season and had 29 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Before this season he had thrown 18 touchdowns with 19 interceptions in his limited amount of starts.
Finally named the Redskins starter for the season, Cousins has thrived in the role. The running game has been way below what was expected so the offence has been on the back of the former-Michigan State quarterback.
We could be hearing a few more calls of “YOU LIKE THAT!” if Cousins keeps up his form.
The teams have met 34 times in the past. The Packers have won 19 of those games to the Redskins 14. There has been one tie.
The last time the teams met was in 2013. Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdowns as the Packers ran out 38-20 winners. Robert Griffin III was the Redskins’ quarterback that day.
The teams have met twice in the postseason, but the last game was back in 1972.
